Since this week is National Veterinary Technician Week, we thought we'd talk about why it is important to take your pets for regular checkups and exams.
First and foremost, being on a regular schedule with your pets at the vet will allow for testing that can early detect and prevent some illnesses before becoming severe. Regular dentals can prevent gum disease in cats and dogs. Bloodwork can detect early signs of diabetes, kidney disease, anemia, infection, bone marrow issues, and organ dysfunction.
Heart worm testing can detect Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases early so they can be treated before becoming too dangerous.
Urinalysis testing can show signs of inflammation, infection, kidney disfunction, crystal formation, and diabetes, all which can be treated with the proper medications and treatments.
Fecal testing is important, especially if your pet has access to the outdoors. This will determine if your pet has any parasites, and what kind of parasites they have. Then the veterinarian can give the proper dewormer. Fecal testing is just as important for indoor animals. It is a great way to track your pets' intestinal habits and whether or not they are having any digestive issues.
Lastly, keeping your cats and dogs up to date on the proper vaccinations is very important. Rabies vaccinations, Distemper, Parainfluenza (dogs), Parvo Virus (dogs), Canine influenza, Canine Bordetella, Feline calicivirus, Feline Leukemia, and Feline Panleukopenia.
