Tips to Remember When Traveling With your Dog

Since we are coming up on the summer holidays, I thought I'd take the time to share some very helpful tips to remember when traveling with your pets. Or even if you don't travel with your pets. A lot of these may sound like common sense but it's often that owners don't have what they need or don't know what they need, especially if their dogs get lost and/or they have to reclaim them from an animal shelter. We want people and their pets to be safe ALWAYS but especially when they are in an unfamiliar location.

  • Have a checkup done at the veterinarian. Make sure all vaccinations are up to date.

  • Be prepared for an emergency-Have the contact information programmed in your phone for your regular vet and the nearest 24 hour vet for where you will be traveling to.

  • Make sure you have all necessary belongings for your dog. This includes their crate for safe traveling, their medications, their collar with proper identification (rabies tag, dog license tag, and a tag with proper contact information-a working phone number for you, the owner), leashes, health records, a current rabies certificate, and dog license. Make sure they have enough of their food, plenty of water, and poop bags to clean up after them. Make sure they have some of their toys as well as a puzzle toy with treats, so they are less likely to get bored.

  • You can also have your dog microchipped. This is permanent, but make sure it gets registered with all of your current contact information.

  • Do NOT leave your dog unattended in a vehicle. Do NOT bring your dog anywhere where dogs are not allowed.
